Welcome to Year 2

Year Two – Charles Wicksteed Class Staff

Year Two – Steve Redgrave Class Staff

In Year 2, we aim to inspire every child's love of learning through our topic based curriculum and creative classrooms. Our topics this year will be as follows:

Autumn – ‘All Around the World’ and ‘Kenya’

Spring – ‘Great Fire of London’ and ‘Explorers’

Summer – ‘Wicksteed Park’ and ‘Natural Scientists’.

At St Andrew’s, we love reading. The children will be surrounded by literature in the classrooms and we will read a variety of texts to them throughout the year.  Reading is an essential part of learning, and our expectation is that children read at home at least five times a week. Please keep a log of your child’s reading in the provided reading diary and return this to school daily. The children will take a new reading book home each week on a Monday and will have the opportunity to take home a sharing book at the weekend.

Reading: We want the children to read for pleasure and we encourage them to read every day. If your child is reading other literature at home, please log this in the reading diary too, as we would love to discuss it with them.

Maths: Maths homework will be based on number bonds, learning 2, 10 and 5 times tables and using methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

P.E. for both Year 2 classes will be on a Tuesday afternoon. Please send your child to school in their PE kit on this day. Your child will need black or navy shorts, leggings or joggers, a plain white t-shirt, plimsoles or trainers and a jumper or hoody during colder weather.

Year 2 children will have ongoing assessments in reading, writing and maths throughout the year and we will happily discuss your child’s progress with you. If we feel at any time that that a child is at risk of not reaching their targets, we will support them by carrying out interventions in school and can discuss with you, ways in which you can help at home.

All of the children in Year 2 are required to take their SATs tests in May. There will be two reading papers, a spelling, punctuation and grammar paper and two maths papers. The children will have lots of practice for this throughout the year and we can assure you that no pressure will be put on the children. Any Year 2 children that did not reach the required score to pass their Phonics Screening Check last year, will also need to do this. As a school, we are required to submit the results of these assessments to the Department of Education. Any child with an EHCP may be exempt from the tests or may have special measures put in place.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak to us. We are available every day after school or you can email us on:
